GAZE: CONTEMPLATIVE MIND TO OBJECT

A paradigm that reflects an artist’s philosophy is something that contemporary art world puts much importance to. However, this forces the notion that art must possess a certain concept of a profound nature and easily becomes a mere logical search that overemphasizes the role of subject to induce a discourse. This sometimes obstructs with the original concept of art. Originally, art was a genre whereby the artist recreates and interprets the reality observed through the individual mindset or sensual perspective, expressed via varying techniques. On the other hand, camera was invented with the purpose to capture the moment: which, in this sense, was a superb tool to ‘recreate’, however was not included in the realm of art. In the past, the world was only ‘recreated’ by painting, the primary tool of expression for artist in the past. Now photography has been elevated to a position akin to painting as a key tool for artist and has solidified its standing in the world of contemporary art. It is not a surprise that many gallerists are increasingly paying close attention to this new powerful genre.
